Hazard: No Shoulders, A Lot of Traffic

When I left Elkhorn City, I had 4 major climbs for that day. After my 4th climb, I knew I wasn’t done. After a nice relaxing descent into what I thought was Hindman, I faced one more climb. So, by the time I reached the Historical Society, I was dead tired.

It helped that I was fed a baked potato all-the-way, a huge sundae, and a Stromboli sandwich. I hit the sack. I woke up, spoke with my host David until around noon, when I finally decided to leave. I stopped to talk with a man in Emmalena, and he ended up feeding me a turkey sandwich. Delicious.

I ended up getting very lost in Hazard. I started heading south and am very glad I decided to turn around. Not much in Hazard from what I can see; not a Duke in sight.

# of dogs I’ve been chased by: 97

One of the dogs that chased me, chased me into incoming traffic. I was nearly killed, the dog was nearly killed, and my cycle computer bracket was damaged. I need to get this problem handled. I’ve promised myself a beer when I hit 100. If anyone has a dog whistle please send it my way. On the other hand, my dog sprinting muscles have gotten quite strong. That’s an improvement. In my bad mood, I decided that I would use exercise to push myself out of it. So I pushed myself hard those last miles, but still only made it to Buckhorn Campground. It’s a strange practice to pay for an uncomfortable patch of ground to sleep on, whatever..

I got up early. Twas cold last night. It got down to the mid thirties. I got breakfast from the service station, and was out around 9:00. It was still a cold ride the first hour or two. My right hand (my waving hand) was numb for a little while. I got 40 miles in before 1:00. Not bad, not bad… I take a break, then get right back on the chromoly horse.

My recent food staples: potato salad & cheeseburgers

I fight my way over the few remaining hills in the blue grass region. Entering: The Cumberland Plateau. I got a couple days of rest ahead, gotta hitch back for Trail Days. Now I’m in Berea, KY. Looks like a friendly city.

If you have enjoyed reading my blog during my ride across the country, please consider donating to my savings so that I may create another blog during my hike from Canada to Mexico in 2011.

One Response to Hazard: No Shoulders, A Lot of Traffic

  1. Just wanted to touch base with you.
Once again, in case you lost our address:
    Knott Historical Society, Inc.
    147 Carew Dr
    Duke’s Br Rd
    Hindman, KY 41822
Am keeping up with your blog and it looks as though you’re having a lot of fun, except when the campus security evicted you. There’s a guy, Xavi, from Spain, who I told him that he might meet up with you. He stayed two nights with us and we had a blast. Also a homicide cop and his buddy had heard of you, Steve and Bruce, they may pass you as well.
    Your trusting friend,
    David.
